We must build more use cases for Bitcoin—this is the message from Amor Maclang, the convenor of the successful Philippines Fintech Festival. Maclang believes that with enough use cases, Bitcoin would become unshakeable even by any ‘crypto’ winter.

Maclang, who has headed Digital Pilipinas since 2017, is one of the main organizers of the Philippines Fintech Festival, an event that brought together developers, investors, regulators, startup founders, and the general public to celebrate the fast-growing Filipino fintech sector.

Speaking to CoinGeek Backstage’s Claire Celdran on the sidelines of the event, Maclang pointed out that the difference between a global currency such as the dollar and a smaller national one is the use cases. With the USD being utilized to make payments in global trade, it’s no surprise that most people will accept it despite their relationship with or perception of the United States.

In the same way, Bitcoin must grow beyond being a niche currency and the only way is through building enough use cases for it.

“What we as an industry need to look for is creating more use cases. What we need to do now that there’s an ongoing ‘crypto’ winter is to build more use cases.”

Blockchain use cases have to go beyond payments, she added. While this was the first use case, and still the biggest one today, blockchain is a revolutionary technology that can impact several other sectors.

“For the Philippines, blockchain could transform the economy. The technology could merge our ability for tech adoption and content creation. We’re prolific content creators. What we need to do now is take that propensity to create and overlay it with blockchain technology and become a blockchain content creator NFT hub for the world,” Maclang told CoinGeek.

The Philippines continues to be a major global hub for blockchain, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Web3, and digital asset adoption.
